Why should routine inspections be done?

Mechanical components frequently function in settings where they are subjected to pressure and contact with other parts and industrial operators is inevitable. These factors often result in mechanical failures; thus, it is important to conduct regular inspections that help prevent machine breakdown and ensure maximum operational efficiency.

Common Causes of Mechanical Failure

  • Improper maintenance: Each machine has a finite lifespan, which is influenced by the frequency of maintenance and care. To ensure overall equipment efficiency and proper functionality, scheduled maintenance must be performed. To avoid mechanical breakdowns and increase the machine life span, routine maintenance and component replacement are necessary.
  • Wear and tear: Components’ materials degrade due to frictional forces acting on parts of machinery when in use and can sometimes be to a point where they can no longer perform their intended functions. Factors like metal fatigue, bearing failure, corrosion, misalignment, and general surface deterioration fall under this category of industrial machine failures and can result in components failing unexpectedly.
  • Overheating: When in operation, mechanical parts typically generate heat. This is a result of friction happening when two surfaces slide against one another. Overheating is a sign that the machine has a problem. Inadequate installation, a lack of lubrication, or coolant loss could be the underlying causes. To find the underlying reason for the overheating and fix it, a root-cause analysis must be conducted.

  • Wastage prevention: Wastage is produced in several ways by mechanical faults and an often-seen result of mechanical failure is increased energy consumption during operations. This might result in higher raw material, lubricant, and coolant usage. Routine inspections and prompt correction of even the slightest mechanical errors can prevent waste.
  • Reduced machine downtime: Regular inspections aid in the identification of minor problems before they become severe enough to cause equipment failure. When problems are detected, maintenance can be scheduled and carried out, keeping industrial operations and output uninterrupted. Unplanned downtime is eliminated when issues are fixed timely.
  • Extended machine lifespan: The lifespan of a machine is influenced by many operational factors. Every machine will unavoidably have some defects in how it works, however, rectifying defects immediately is what keeps machines in good health.   Routine inspections help to spot little anomalies before they develop into bigger failures and preventive maintenance rather than reactive maintenance increases a machine’s efficiency. 

Due to their high failure rate, mechanical components in manufacturing industries require the most maintenance attention, which puts a high priority on maintenance teams. In turn, preventive maintenance is always preferable to reactive maintenance.
